How to Hire a Remodeling Contractor in Washington: 8 Things to Check
Choosing the right contractor is the biggest decision in any remodel. A good one makes the project feel easy. The wrong one can leave you with delays, surprise costs or unfinished work.
Whether you're planning a kitchen, bathroom or deck project, here are eight things to check before you sign anything.
1. Verify their Washington contractor registration
Every contractor working in Washington must be registered with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I). You can look up any contractor for free with L&I's Verify a Contractor tool. Search by name or license number to see:
Whether the registration is active
Their bond and insurance information
Any history of claims or infractions
Our registration number is ELEVARI750M3, and you're welcome to look us up.
2. Confirm bonding and insurance
Make sure the contractor has an active bond and liability insurance. Insurance protects your home if something goes wrong during the project. Ask for proof, and check that it's current.
3. Look at real, recent projects
Photos on a website are a good start, but look for real project details: what the homeowner wanted, what was done and how it turned out. You can see examples on our Projects page.
4. Read reviews, and read how they respond
Check Google, Yelp, Nextdoor and other review sites. Look for patterns across many reviews, not just the star rating, and notice whether the contractor responds professionally.
5. Get a detailed written estimate
A good estimate explains what's included, what materials are planned and what isn't covered. Vague, one-line quotes often lead to "change orders" and surprise costs later.
6. Ask about permits
Many kitchen, bathroom and deck projects need a permit from your city or county. Ask who will pull the permits and schedule inspections. A professional contractor will know what your project needs.
7. Understand the timeline and communication plan
Ask how long the project should take, what could cause delays and how you'll get updates. Knowing who to call, and how quickly they'll respond, makes a big difference once work starts.
8. Get everything in a written contract
Before work begins, make sure you have a written contract that covers:
The full scope of work
Price and payment schedule
Start date and estimated timeline
How changes will be handled
